by Larry Chiang on December 11, 2009

Larry Chiang is one of the luckiest people you will ever meet. He breaks down an algorithm for getting lucky: Getting a book on the Google home page.

Being lucky is better than being good.

My book that launched 09-09-09 was promoted by google with a temporary doodle for a few hours early Wednesday.

I can not reverse engineer it fully but can offer a handful of ideas. Btw, this is drafted on an iPhone

-1- Google rewards people that take a stand.

I stand for good credit. I pressured Matt Cutts for search word optimization of the phrase ‘free credit report’. I asked Marissa Mayer, Larry Page and Sergey Brin about how its not free at FreeCreditReport.com. It is now no longer #1 :-)

I also stand for the truth about credit scores where the monopoly, Fair Isaac, tells the America public the average FICO is 723. The real average is 535. The twitter account I created to tweet the truth about credit is gaining ground too. twitter.com/freeCreditRepor
-2- Hustle for It.

I kiss butt all the time and I never forget to follow-up a favor. I kiss but like the way Bruce Li talks about resisting like water (Year of the Dragon). Water always wins (eventually)

-3- Catch a Lucky Break

I promoted it to Amazon, NY Times, the WSJ, Harbus, Amazon (I said Amazon twice because I blog on that platform) and now its on the Google home page. If you get enough momentum, you will maybe catch a lucky break.
-4- Offer Up Your Time to Kids

By ‘kids’ I mean as old as college but I say offer time because mentoring down the food chain gives you an energy that only karma can get for you.

I first taught little league and its empowering to show a kid field a ground ball. I saw first hand what credit card debt does to college students causing them to drop out and I did something about it. Karma is real so start by helping out a kid at risk.

I have an entire chapter on Karma that I will send you free if you text message me your email address.
-5- I feel like Andy Dufrain from Shawshank.

After he got a shipment of books for the prison library, Dufrain started writing even more letters. I am going to start petitioning for my next date 11-11-2011 where 24 1s in a row gets you a FICO over 750.

I also want to thank my mentor Mark McCormack. I want you to know that because you mentored me through your awesome book I have a company that kicks ass and all of this recognition that I really do not deserve. When I get to heaven, I’ll bring you my raggety eared copy of “What They Don’t Teach at Harvard Business School” (and a sharpie this time) for you to sign :-)

If you are reading this, its only because of this book:
