Squeezing Nuggets of Knowledge from Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in NYC

by Larry Chiang on December 11, 2009

Larry Chiang gets mentored by all kinds of people. He rubs elbows with cute fuzzy mascots and celebrities. Recently, he was featured at Harbus, the Harvard Business School publication. In this post, he learns from New York Fashion Week attendees.

I catch people setting their goals too low.

New York Fashion Week is a work conference. You can be just “happy to be here” or you can use it as a springboard. If I were not an author launching a book here at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, I’d still use NYFW for work purposes.

Most nuggets of knowledge I collected fell into this category of “get free stuff”

“It’s so awesome and nice to be important (FRONT ROW at NYFW) but it’s also important to be nice (striking pay dirt with multiple goodie bags)!”
– Monica Barnett, blueprintforstyle.com

A nugget amongst the nuggets was this:

“College provides us with a backbone of knowledge. Drive and ambition cannot be taught, they have to come from within and the practice of passion and proactivity is the key ingredient to success.”

My nugget is come to New York Fashion Week with an intention. Mine was to meet five good prospects for friends, help 3-5 emerging entrepreneurs, get 2-5 leads for new modeling gigs and gather up content for two articles.

Disclosure: I model and make money modeling.

Larry Chiang works in credit. He mentions his mentor’s book, “What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School” all the time.
