What They Still Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School: a common sense guide to how I crashed VentureBeat AND TechCrunch.
When I crashed VentureBeat I became VIP using a system. I put myself on the wait list for a press pass, and started networking from the lobby. As an entrepreneur, you should always…
Get home-field advantage on the road. Learn everything you can about the event and it’s location before you get there. Go to the venue days before the event begins and survey it. I can’t stress this enough.
Find where people are most likely to gather, entrances, exits, everything. You must know these things in order to network efficiently and navigate the area with confidence. You want to feel like it’s Your Place people are invited to, not the other way around. You host.
For all you entrepreneurs out there with no money (most of you!): you don’t need more than $50 of marketing money to make $300,000 worth of contacts in a $2k conference. I used an 18×24 foamcore sign with my logo on it and 3 specific mylar balloons from Safeway, thanks to which I had dozens of people come up and talk to me without me even having to go out of my way. Sure you feel a little random & ridiculous at first, but it works in a specific way you must do to believe.
This is my sign.
It’s my company and it is a call-to-action.
