The Deleted Stanford Bio for Larry Chiang

by Larry Chiang on March 13, 2013

UPDATE 12-10-13: It is back up, my bio is.

Coach: Larry Chiang, CEO, Duck9 and Stanford Frosh / Soph Mentor

Most bios intimidated me when I was an undergrad.

I want this bio to build you up. I want my bio to make you financially rich. I wanted this bio to be worth more to you and build more shareholder equity than a $10mm VC check.

*** BIO for LARRY CHIANG  ***
Hi, I am Larry Chiang

I leverage mentorship in a method, manner and magnitude that is unmatched.

What most people don’t know is that I gained early success because of a book I read, “What They Don’t Teach You At Harvard Business School“. I used that book to network with and get access to mentors. Yes that included the author of the book!

Reading Mark McCormack’s book as an engineer helped me get street smart. In mentoring undergrads, I attempt to expose and help investigate specific granular tactical methods that get stuff done. People often ask me what one thing I did that helped me the most. I answer that the one thing I did is the 650 little things I did.

I focus on the first few steps out of the batters box on the way to first base. I don’t only admire the big home runs. I really like showing people how to hit singles and base-hits. I also love pre-preneurs and helping them reverse engineer the steps required to be a founder. For example, in working with BASES freshman at Stanford in Tresidder, I mentored them to execute a plan out that engineers their first three internships in a row. Here is what their experiences were like documented here and here. During numerous Stanford Entrepreneurship Weeks, I engineered up over a dozen events where undergrads took over alpha roles. An example is Reverse VC Pitch Party and Panel. Another example is where Stanford Athletes mentored other Stanford Athletes on how to become a VC funded ‘baby business’.

There is a motto I try to live by… engineers don’t let engineers graduate without street smarts. I am very much looking forward to meeting you but here are three ways to reach out to me if my office hours are full: Email me at larry @duck9.com (be sure to include my cell (650) 283-8008 AND your cell in the subject line — it busts spam and facebook / twitter
Message me at www.facebook.com/larry.chiang
Tweet at me www.twitter.com/larrychiang

Nice to meet you via my bio — I look forward to seeing you in person at eWeek.

Larry Chiang
P.S. Here is my picture so if you see me at Eweek stuff, grab me or shout my name and I will make time to say hi to you

I am wearing the same pants right now!! Photo credit: Mona Brooks.  Most keynoters speak then leave. When I spoke, I talked for 3 min and yielded the balance of my time to undergrad females to speak. It was after all a SWIB event. Not a washed up athletes confessing mentee mistakes at the NCAA level :-D

P.P.S. I have another mentor who helped me with social awkwardness. Susan Roane wrote how to work a room and here is my book report
